Up a creek… or whatever works for you
I believe in a day off, but not everyone thinks that way.
First, God says work six days and rest the seventh. What about that?
Second, we really need it.
If you don’t make time for a day off :
- You may be doing things outside of your triangle. Have you eliminated the things which don’t align with God’s call on your life? Most things take you nowhere.
- You may think you are indispensable. Sorry to break the news to you, but…
- It shows that your schedule is more important than the 4th commandment.
To my shame I have been guilty of all three. So I am resolved to honor God and the temple he gave me to live in. I will care for my well-being and health and take a day off. Join me and consider:
- Leave your house. (Or stay home if that is more relaxing)
- Don’t answer your phone.
- Do nothing on the computer, no FB, emails, twitter – nothing.
- Discover the place you can best rest.
My wife, Julie, likes to stay at home in her sweats and curl up with a book by the front window. I like to go to the mountains, fields, woods, or by a river. My Wisconsin roots surely have something to do with where my soul finds rest. Julie and I recently found a mountain creek not far from home, La Pedriza. We set our lawn chairs in the middle of the creek! We read, snack, sleep and get wet. We even talk once in a while.
Think about it. Keeping a day of rest:
- Honors God.
- Your family deserves it.
- Your body deserves the rest.
- Your coworkers need you at your best.
- It’s a win, win, win, win situation.
Don’t delay.

Oh, you don´t know how guilty I am regarding this commandment… I hope and pray to be able to change that starting now… And don´t be surprise if one day I´ll meet you at Pedriza, I love that place!
Excellent. You have organized these thoughts and present them in an easy to understand, straightforward way. I hope every missionary in Spain reads this.
thanks, i am an ‘intercessor’ and realize my need afresh for time to smell the roses and hear the birds singing. Imagining myself in that creek ..
