What do you do when it rains?

by jacob bock

Rain hit Madrid this week, and it made me think back to a time years ago.   When we first started preaching open-air, someone on my team would invariably call on a rainy day and ask, “Are we still going to preach on the streets today – in the rain?”  The temptation to cancel is always there, you can be sure of that.  To say, “Let’s just stay inside and pray,” seems not only justifiable, it sounds spiritual.

The Spirit of the Lord made it clear to us that:

  1. He is ALWAYS at work in the hearts of men and women, drawing them to himself.
  2. He makes these divine appoints for us; what if we don’t show up?
  3. People are on the streets even when it rains.

So we made the commitment years ago: we evangelize no matter what. Just last night a man on the street asked our missionary associate, ”What do you do when it rains?”  Bri matter-of-factly said, “We bring our umbrellas.”

Hence:

  • When it is cold, we dress warm.
  • When it is hot, we dress cool.
  • When it hails, that’s when we run for cover!  (Oh, yeah. It happens!) …and only because no one is on the streets.

I have yet to find a valid reason to keep us off the streets and lift our voices to proclaim the good news. If only ONE soul stops to listen, it is worth it.

I remember the summer I was there it started raining so we pulled the redbox to the edge where people were standing and Julia said to the people “because you have no where to go we are going to preach to you”. Then you made me preach to them soaking wet standing in the rain. Not my best message I ever gave. But I will always remember the lesson. God will even show up in the pouring rain!

Bravissimo…we sang on one street corner for one hour every Saturday at eleven rain, shine, frost, snow, sleet, cold, heat, and even when there was nobody or hardly anybody. What a blessing. Thanks for the encouraging word. Here in Jamaica, however, it’s almost always sunny and warm…NO EXCUSES at all…

    Blessings
