Wanted: Leaders (Part 2)

by jacob bock

There is such a great need for good leadership. So, like everyone else, I constantly look for leaders. But not any leader will do.  As I pray, I am always asking God to bring the right people into my life. Here is a list of characteristics I look for in a leader.

  1. Integrity.  They are honest with strong moral principles.
  2. Godliness.  I see them in the prayer room.  Their conversation is generally about the things of God, not about the world.  Their life is marked by holiness.
  3. Humility.  They don’t ask for a position.
  4. Faithfulness.  They always show up; they’re always there; I can count on them.  Day in and day out, there they are, plugging away at the work of ministry – and they don’t look for recognition.
  5. Good Attitude.  They are positive and don’t complain.
  6. Magnetic.  People follow leaders; it’s natural.
  7. They are loyal to me, the leader.

I don’t quickly hand out titles or offer a position. I usually observe people for six months to a year.  Someone may not even know they are a candidate or that I am watching, but I am always watching. Only then do I ask if they would help lead a team of soul-winners.

Consult with your present leadership team. This is vitally important. How do other leaders feel about the rising leader?  Your whole team should be unanimous.  Wait if another leader has reservations. As we work and pray together God will make known who he wants on the team. It takes a lot of time to recognize and mentor leaders. Take the time.  Be patient and wait on God. Trust me. God will bring you the right leaders at the right time.

Amen! Great thoughts. Reminds me of a preacher I heard years ago who started out a message saying, “God wants FAT people!”

Of course he had our attention with that statement, then he explained: “‘F-A-T’ –Faithful, Available, Teachable” He went on to talk about those qualities and how if any one of the three is lacking, things don’t work, but if someone has those three qualities, there is nothing good that cannot be accomplished.
